When I started the Northern Writers Studio in 2020, I never imagined being together with other writers in a shared online space would be so rewarding. The sense of being part of something, sharing time, ideas and space with others is magical. And I miss it. So, I’ve been thinking about ways to keep those connections going as we all grow our writing lives and practices.
Writing Forward is my new project. I’ll use my platform here on Substack to bring writers together; to write, share and encourage each other. Here’s how it will work:
Free subscribers will get a regular newsletter from me, talking about my work, my process and sharing useful writing opportunities.
Paid subscribers will get regular writing prompts and provocations and be invited to share their thoughts and questions in comments. I’ll also host regular Zoom Write-Ins to get us together to do what matters…write.
I would be lying if I didn’t tell you how challenging I’m finding life at the moment. There have been some of the most amazing ups in my writing life, but also quite a few lows and stumbling blocks in my professional life. What keeps me going is my love of writing and of sharing my skills and knowledge.
I’ve worked as a writing facilitator for over seven years now and have worked as an associate lecturer in higher education. I’ve chaired book events, led workshops, designed programmes for young people and supported writers with their freelance career. When I learn something new, my first instinct is to share it.
And Writing Forward will help me do that in three ways. First, as a space to come together to put words on the page. Second, as an accountability tool, to keep you on track and motivated to bring your ideas to life. And third, as a way to learn, to share ideas and knowledge and to keep doors open for each other.
I hope you’ll join me…hope to write with you soon!
Sarah
